Nottingham has lost another one of its popular record shops.

Fopp, which were based in the Broadmarsh centre, will not be reopening.

It was announced on Friday that the owners of the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre intu would not be reopening the doors to the centre due to health and safety concerns.

Intu, which have been in financial difficulties since before the pandemic, have been unable to allow contractor Sir Robert McAlpine to continue with the development, leaving many parts of the centre half demolished and open to the elements.

Fopp, relocated to the Broadmarsh Centre in 2014 and was one of the remaining retailers in the centre.

HMV, who own Fopp, released a list of the stores which are opening on Monday 15th June, with the Nottingham Fopp store not being listed.

Staff have since been informed that the store will not be reopening. The Fopp Nottingham social media pages have also been taken down.

Fopp Nottingham social media account were taken down yesterday evening.

A spokespersons for Fopp said: “At this stage the future of the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre as a whole is unclear. Intu, our landlord, has closed the centre and hence our store in Nottingham has not joined others across the group that opened this morning. We have been given no clear idea of what this means in the longer term for this one store, but at present we have had to keep the doors closed while these issues are resolved.

“Our first thought in the meantime is for our colleagues in the store, who have been working to ready our store for reopening and are disappointed not to now be able to open on Monday. We hope to quickly have confirmation of the owners’ intentions for the centre in order to update our colleagues and our many loyal customers.”

Wilko, which also has a store in the centre issued a statement on Friday afternoon expressing their disappointment at the decision for the Broadmarsh to remain closed.

The closure of Fopp is another blow for music fans in the city. Over the past few years The Music Exchange, Forever Records and Plates have all closed down.

Thankfully for music fans Nottingham still has Rough Trade on Broad Street, Rob’s Records on Hurts Yard and HMV in Victoria Centre.
